The Flat Phenomenon
Flat Panel Display (FPD) technology refers to monitors with flat screens. Over the years, FPD technology has improved significantly, creating easy-to-use products with brighter light and higher resolution images. Flat Panel Displays (FPDs) are increasingly becoming important components of modern electronic products.
Advances in display technology havemade possible the widespread use of devices including cell phones, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), camcorders, digital cameras, laptops, and televisions among others.
There are numerous FPD technologies available in the market: Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display (AMLCD), Passive Matrix Liquid Crystal Display (PMLCD), Thin Film Electroluminescent (TFEL), Plasma Display Panel (PDP), Light Emitting Diodes (LED), Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED)/Organic Electroluminescent (OEL), Field Emission Display (FED) and Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD). Although, at present, LCD panels are the most popular amongst all, OLED panels arefast gaining popularity.'
The Trajectory for LCD and OLED
The FPDmarket has witnessed several changes over the last five years. Although the display industry has been dominated by cathode ray tube (CRT) technology for the past fewdecades, with rapid scientific advancement and discovery of new materials, LCD technology has replaced CRT as the primary choice for all display devices.Cell phones, video games, computers, large screen televisions, and projectorsenjoy the benefit of LCD. The main attraction of LCD technology, especially thin-film transistors LCD (TFT-LCD), compared to other types of display technologies is the incurred cost. Being a well-adopted technology, TFT-LCDs have a much lower price point.
