The Lighter Side

Innovations in New Product Development and Marketing 2008 was a huge success! The cocktail reception and the wine and dine on Monday night had everyone relaxing and enjoying each other's company before another great day of networking.

We finished the event with an all-out Beach Blowout! Surrounded by the San Diego Coronado Bay and the Pacific Ocean, the Blowout was a fitting end to our best Innovations in New Product Development and Marketing event ever!

Reducing Energy Costs: Vision for the Future

The price of crude oil has reached stratospheric levels, crossing $145 a barrel early in July. Such record high oil prices have reignited interest in alternative, clean, and renewable sources of energy as well as in new technologies that allow industrial process to be more energy efficient.

One of the pioneers in this area is the Quebec-based Vaperma Inc., which has developed a breakthrough polymer membrane technology that drastically reduces the energy costs and the carbon footprint for a wide variety of industrial processes.

Creating and Maintaining Value in a Down Economy

“To innovate is to grow—but in an era when the failure rate for new product launch ranges from an estimated 50% and 75%, that’s not an easy, or inexpensive, proposition for business today.”

A study recent study revealed that:

  • For every four projects that enter development, only one makes it
    to the market

  • At launch, at least one of three products fail despite research and
    planning
  • An estimated 46% of all resources allocated to product
development and commercialization by U.S. firms is spent on
products that are cancelled or fail to yield an adequate financial
    return

General Electric Company
GE's Successful Innovations: Imagination Breakthroughs

The Global Director of Innovation and Strategic Connections for GE, Patia McGrath, was interviewed about the company's successful innovations by Ethan Smith, Director of NA Sales for the Technical Insights Group at Frost & Sullivan.

Ethan: I’ve heard the term "imagination breakthrough" used to identify GE's successful innovations. Can you explain what an "imagination breakthrough" is and to what extent is GE relying on these "breakthroughs" for long term growth?

Patia: The Imagination Breakthrough (IB) program has been in place since 2003 and currently has about 50 projects in its portfolio. Jeff Immelt actively tracks this collection of organic growth projects, and because of this CEO spotlight, we often say that they are also a protected class of ideas. All of our businesses have IBs, and Jeff’s keen interest helps to make sure they are resourced and executed.
