Insomnia: Stop Counting Sheep
Insomnia is not a disease on its own but a symptom resulting from health problems such as arthritis, asthma, allergies, diabetes, depression, heart disease, hypertension or jet lag. Pharmaceutical companies spend millions on educating patients and physicians on the serious implications of not sleeping and the role of prescription sleep aids in treating sleeplessness. Ambien has been the leading drug in the insomnia market since its launch in 1993 as it has fewer side effects than the traditional benzodiazepines.

Radically Changing Dynamics in the Antipsychotics Market
Eli Lilly and Company’s Zyprexa is a leading drug in the antipsychotic market that generated US $590 million in the first year (1997) of its launch in the United States alone. In 2002, it propelled and exceeded $2.5 billion sales. Unfortunately, several new market entrants such as Abilify and old drugs such as Seroquel combined to cause the downfall of Zyprexa in 2003. New indications, new product formulations and several patent expiries are all likely to drastically change the dynamics of the antipsychotic market.

Oligonucleotides: Technologies and Therapeutics
Oligonucleotides are an emerging new class of therapeutics consisting of short nucleic acid chains that work by interfering with the processing of genetic information. Oligonucleotide technologies provide a highly specific strategy that targets a wide range of diseases at the genetic level. In this rapidly expanding market, the race is on to develop oligonucleotide drugs for the treatment of a host of diseases. However, with the developments in the areas of biotechnology, drug delivery and chemical synthesis, the importance of oligonucleotides is expected to have steady growth within pharmaceutical portfolios.

Strategic Analysis of the World Paediatric Pharmaceuticals Markets
"The market for paediatric drugs is soon likely to undergo dramatic expansion due to the new US Paediatric Research Equity Act that enables the Food and Drug Administration to request drug data for children as well as the growing reali
sation that drugs markedly react different in children than they do in adults," says Frost & Sullivan's pharmaceutical analyst team. This strategic analysis service (SAS) from Frost & Sullivan is a visual presentation of the latest trends in the global paediatric pharmaceuticals markets.

Frost & Sullivan Viewpoint - Technology Watch

RNAi Technology: Will it deliver the Unfulfilled Promises of Biotechnology?
Diseases can be treated by disabling the product of the disease causing gene. Currently, gene silencing by ribonucleic acid interference (RNAi) technology is used for target validation and therapeutics. As the interest in RNAi grows, the list of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies involved in the technology also continues to grow exponentially. Currently, there are over 50 companies in the United States and Europe that are involved directly or indirectly in this technology.

Industry Measurement Tools - Country Industry Forecast

Mexican Pharmaceuticals and Drugs Industry
The Mexican pharmaceutical industry is one of the most developed in Latin America and has a significant domestic production of bulk active ingredients and finished products. The industry improved due to increasing purchasing power and improved health awareness in Mexico. Traditionally, Mexican firms have had the largest share in the public sector, but the introduction of a private market in generics is changing this scenario. It has created a new niche for small local enterprises. Heavy reliance on imported raw materials is a characteristic of the industry. The future of the Mexican pharmaceutical industry largely relies on the forthcoming changes in the Mexican sanitary legislation and the reform of the public health care system.
