The Challenge

A leading chip manufacturer was faced with the challenge of improving its market positioning in the United Kingdom (U.K.). One of the primary businesses of the company involved manufacturing a chip that enabled Wi-fi/WLan connectivity across various consumer electronics product lines.

The company commissioned Frost & Sullivan for the project based on our capabilities in the technology adoption market, as well as our understanding of both the chip manufacturing and consumer electronics industries. The objective of the study was to gauge current and future adoption of Wi-Fi/WLan wireless technologies in consumer electronics products. The findings from the study were to be used to strategize, apportion, and prioritize the company’s investment in the chip manufacturing business. Also, a goal of the study was to enable the company to identify business lines to pursue in the future.

The Process

Frost & Sullivan addressed the challenge by employing a proprietary technology adoption market model. Frost & Sullivan followed a three-step process; in the first step, we established the total market of different consumer electronics in the U.K. The second step involved screening the products that were Wi-fi/WLan-enabled. This helped to establish the current market of products that were capable of wireless connectivity. The final step leveraged the technology adoption market model to identify the adoption trend, both currently and in the future. The results were scrutinized in the light of the current and future plans of consumer electronics manufacturers in supplying wireless-enabled devices.
