MOUNTAIN VIEW, California — October 9, 2008 — Based on its recent analysis of the United States remanufactured engines and components aftermarket for light vehicles, Frost & Sullivan recognizes ATK North America with the 2008 Frost & Sullivan Company of the Year Award for excellence in business development, competitive strategy, customer satisfaction, and leadership.
ATK North America is the largest private-label engine remanufacturer in the United States, selling not only a full line of gasoline car and truck engines, but also diesel engines. The company offers more than 1,400 different engine families, and carries a full line of domestic, Japanese, Korean, and European nameplate vehicle engines. Frost & Sullivan’s research reveals that ATK provides the broadest product coverage in the engine remanufacturing industry.
“ATK is consolidating its competitive power in the aftermarket through acquisitions that strategically position it to adapt to changing market conditions,” says Frost & Sullivan Industry Manager Avijit Ghosh. “As foreign nameplates continue to grow in the U.S. auto market, ATK bought Orient Engine Inc. early this year to expand its offerings and give it the in-house competency to remanufacture engines for Asian vehicles.”
While today’s engines are built better and last longer, the cylinder heads are not as durable. As a result, ATK’s timely acquisition of California Cylinder Head in January 2008 will help it capture a greater market share of the cylinder head industry.
The company remanufactures long-block and drop-in gasoline and diesel engines that adhere to OE specifications. Its does not support short-block engines that have high warranty failure rates and that can weaken ATK’s quality control.
ATK is now manufacturing brand new 4.0-liter engines for Chrysler’s Jeep brand, and exporting new and remanufactured engines to the Middle East, with plans to launch export opportunities in Europe by the end of this year. It is the only remanufacturer to maintain the prestigious ISO/TS 16949 quality certification, which supports the company’s product quality and enables it to expand geographically at such a rapid pace.
The company has also added a new high-performance division to build more powerful engines for domestic and Asian nameplates, launching an e-commerce site to support this program. This initiative allows buyers to choose custom-built engine specifications and calculate their prices online.
“In 2007, ATK reported outstanding growth in unit shipments and revenues over 2006 totals, and expects similar results for 2008 - a remarkable achievement in such a saturated, mature, and fragmented market,” notes Ghosh “In 2008, ATK holds the distinction as the only company that sells engines to every major mass merchant distributor in the United States.”
The company has made further improvements by restructuring itself to allow stronger focus on quality, customer service and marketing. ATK’s engine remanufacturing process has been approved by the U.S government, making it a government-approved supplier.
“ATK is strongly committed to quality control and has added certified Six Sigma Black Belts to its staff for added customer satisfaction,” adds Ghosh. “The company aggressively markets its products in different segments, has clearly-defined branding strategies for various product offerings, and maintains a total quality initiative that measures the cost of product quality at every production step – from the sourcing of cores to final delivery of the engines to its customers.”
Overall, ATK has shown outstanding flexibility in producing high-quality and technologically advanced engines, allowing it to gain ground in this competitive industry. In addition, the company’s outstanding customer service strategies enhance the power of its brand, earning it the Frost & Sullivan Company of the Year Award.
Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to the company that has demonstrated unparalleled excellence within its industry in terms of business development, competitive strategy, customer satisfaction, and leadership.
