Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals Receives Frost & Sullivan’s 2004 Specialty Product of the Year Award
Date Published: 17 Nov 2004

Palo Alto, CA — November 11, 2004 — Frost & Sullivan’s research service U.S. Insomnia Therapies Markets recognizes Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals for revolutionizing the sales of the 7.5 mg formulation of Restoril. Mallinckrodt’s specialty pharmaceutical group strategically evaluates under promoted products in specific therapeutic areas and capitalizes on branded pharmaceutical growth opportunities in the marketplace to fulfill the unmet needs of patients. The company has rapidly and successfully positioned this safe and effective prescription for the short-term treatment of insomnia on the level of other insomnia market leaders.

"Mallinckrodt’s branded business has grown into a thriving piece of our Pharmaceutical platform," said Mike Collins, President of Mallinckrodt’s Pharmaceutical Division and keynote speaker at the ceremony held in Naples, Florida on November 10, 2004. "The success of the brand is directly attributed to our strong sales and marketing teams."

Recognizing Mallinckrodt’s concentrated sales and marketing efforts in promoting the only branded benzodiazepine for insomnia, Frost & Sullivan presents the company with the 2004 Specialty Product of the Year Award. "Revenue growth for the 7.5 mg formulation of Restoril has taken off since Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals acquired the brand from Novartis in 2001," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Patrick Rajan. "Through revised positioning and effective promotion, Mallinckrodt has taken a previously neglected product and created a niche market for Restoril – providing value to patients and physicians."

The company’s unique selling proposition has emphasized the fact that this low dosage of Restoril, while helping patients sleep at night, also reduces daytime drowsiness. In fact, in a recent clinical trial early morning awakenings were reduced in elderly patients where this is a particular problem. Moreover, unlike other sleep medications, Restoril uses conjugative metabolism, thus reducing the concern for drug interactions. This is a critical factor for special patient populations and patients taking multiple medications who are likely to be susceptible to cognitive impairment.

Restoril 7.5 mg, with its intermediate half-life of 8.8 hours, allows patients to enjoy a full night’s sleep from "the low-dose doze" without the next-day hangover effects, and is often prescribed as the initial dose, which is consistent with the recommendation of the National Sleep Foundation. "The product’s efficacy has been supported by strategic marketing efforts, including increased professional detailing and sampling to psychiatrists as well as primary care physicians," states Rajan. Many managed care plans have placed Restoril 7.5 mg as a preferred product to their formularies. Due to the excellent coverage and the preferred, patients are able to pay significantly less.

This award is presented to a company each year that focuses on developing products that address the unmet medical needs of specific patient populations. It recognizes the innovation that the company has contributed to the industry in terms of providing patients and doctors with effective options and market acceptance.

Through close collaboration with their extensive network of manufacturing plants, Mallinckrodt is extremely well-positioned to formulate line extensions for existing products. Other Mallinckrodt Pharmaceutical products include pain relief drugs and pharmaceuticals to treat for depression and addiction.
