Frost & Sullivan Recognizes MicroStrain's Radical Wireless Accelerometers
Date Published: 2 Dec 2004

Palo Alto, Calif. — December 2, 2004 — Frost & Sullivan has acknowledged MicroStrain, Inc.’s exceptional product innovation ability in pioneering the production of the wireless accelerometer. Its product line of wireless accelerometer systems is called G-Link™.

G-Link is a high-speed, triaxial accelerometer node created by combining micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) accelerometers with micro data logging transceiver systems. This product can uniquely connect to 26 different on-stream G-Links simultaneously.

The G-Link wireless accelerometer nodes in each packet contain 2 KHz sweep rates and are combined with 2 Mbytes flash memory. Extraordinarily, the package weighs barely 20 grams and is extremely compact.

"The wireless communication is facilitated by the highly specialized proprietary software developed by MicroStrain," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Dr. Rajender Thusu. "This enables the measurement of dynamic responses for structural health monitoring of buildings in civil engineering and condition monitoring of machines in industrial applications."

The accelerometer has been designed for test and measurement-type applications rather than for common applications such as air bags, adaptive brakes, and active suspension or alarm systems in cars. However, it can be used to monitor the condition of vehicles and civil/ship structures to enable preventive maintenance and timely repairs.

MicroStrain’s rostrum of innovative, Agile-Link TM wireless product offerings includes G-LINK TM, SG-LINK TM wireless strain gauge system, V-LINK TM wireless data logging transceiver and TC-Link TM wireless thermocouple system. Other products offered by MicroStrain include EmbedSense miniature wireless sensors and, Strain Link micro miniature instrumentation system.

G-LINK has, more than any other product, helped accelerometers make inroads into the highly sensitive and challenging wireless medical devices, aerospace and defense, and industrial markets.

The 2004 Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Innovation is presented to the company that has shown significant improvement in sales by launching a broad line of products and technologies. The competitive advantages of the products, due to the revolutionary technologies used, have set the company on a growth trajectory in the market.

"The high reliability, durability, simplicity, and precision of the G-Link accelerometer have resulted in the rapid expansion of its end-user base," notes Dr. Thusu. "MicroStrain has demonstrated an ability to develop a product range that has excelled in the face of intense competition, making it richly deserving of the 2004 Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Innovation."
