Palo Alto, Calif. — September 21st, 2005 — Frost & Sullivan’s recent analysis, Mobile Software Solutions for Intelligent Real-Time Voice and Data Communications, selected Appear Networks as the recipient of the 2005 Excellence in Technology Award for the Appear IQ, its intelligent wireless communication platform for wireless IP networks.
Appear’s solution is a groundbreaking open design wireless communication platform providing mobile frontline employees with easy access to critical real-time information.
"The Appear IQ is a highly scalable platform that is able to efficiently extend legacy applications to the mobile environment," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Vedavalli Rangan. "It reduces the time and expense involved in operating a range of handheld devices by reducing training/helpdesk requirements, upgrade/update processes, and connectivity costs."
For example, Paris Subway employees are now equipped with WLAN-enabled Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). Using the Cisco-based WLAN network and the Appear IQ platform, the employee is automatically recognized and can synchronize or receive personalized information related to his job function. This solution, to be deployed on 5000 mobile devices, turns the WLAN hotspot into an intelligent working environment: the Workspot. Itinerary planning, traffic disruptions, timetables, real-time traffic information and other location-based information are automatically pushed onto the employee’s mobile device depending on his precise location, profile and time of the day.
Appear IQ is comprised of the Appear Context Engine (ACE), Appear Proxy, Appear Positioning Engine (APE), Appear Synchronization Engine (ASE), and Appear Client.
The Context Engine compiles contextual data for an understanding of end users’ informational needs. After filtering available services and real-time information against this profile for relevance, the data is sent to the users’ handheld devices.
The Appear Positioning Engine detects new users in a wireless zone and provides location information for users, devices, and other assets to the Appear Context Engine. The Appear Client makes the process of accessing information and using mobile applications a relatively simple and easy operation, thereby, speeding up the user’s ability to respond to any situation.
Current information and applications to use offline are stored by the Appear Client for the benefit of frontline workers who constantly move in and out of wireless zones. This maintains the productivity and levels of customer response even in situations where a device loses its connection to the Appear Context Engine.
Among the key differentiating factors for the Appear IQ platform are its value-added features such as over-the-air (OTA) provisioning, location tracking, and full-distributed architecture. The platform leverages advances in human-machine interface technology and ergonomics to provide a unique ‘browserless’ interface.
For user situational information, the Appear Context Engine optimally uses a comprehensive set of context criteria such as location, time, user role, and network bandwidth. Such context-aware, on-site intelligence enables the instant filtering of complex enterprise applications and data to mobile users.
"Significantly, the Appear Context Engine integrates several high-end technologies including pinpoint Wi-Fi positioning, advanced VoIP functions and context-aware push of mobile applications," notes Ms. Rangan. "It also finds widespread applications for customer information, maintenance and security workers operating in verticals such as transportation, public sector, retail, hospitality & leisure etc."
Each year Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to the company that has pioneered the development of an innovative technology, which has either impacted, or has the potential to affect, several market sectors. This Award recognizes the recipient’s successful technology development, which is expected to significantly contribute to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture.
Held in Las Vegas, Frost & Sullivan’s Mobile Communications Awards Banquet honors world-class companies for innovative developments that deliver unparalleled insight on wireless and mobile strategy, technology, platforms and services. An annual event, the banquet recognizes the quality and merit of distinguished individuals and companies.
