Technology Overview

Changing User Demands Provide Filip to Advanced Search Engines and Varied Search Applications

Search engines have evolved beyond delivering text-based results. New search engines and varied search applications have emerged, driven by the exponential growth and advancements in the mobile and social computing domains. Web 3.0 technologies and semantic web concepts have broadened search engine capabilities, creating lucrative market opportunities. “Ease of internet access, increase in social computing and high-performance mobile gadgets have sky-rocketed user expectations, compelling search engines to perform better,” notes the analyst of this research. “High performance search engines are required to manage voluminous data and retrieve useful information for the user.”

Accessing the internet is getting progressively simpler and easier. The escalating use of mobile phones, widespread availability of Internet Access Points (APs), and the increase in social computing have fuelled the need for search engines to perform better.  “Users expect newer features in search engines with scope for customization, personalization and smart search that would make their social and web experience more productive and enjoyable,” explains the analyst. “Leveraging on the users’ social web graph, search engines are expected to deliver results based on user likes, dislikes and interests.”

Smart Searching Technologies Set to Rule the Roost

Major challenges likely to limit the performance of search engines include the rise in spam content, irrelevance of results, and time spent in identifying the required information.  In addition, as users are inclined to personalized results, there is likely to be need for access to user information which might generate privacy concerns. “With more websites incorporating search engine optimization techniques, search results are including websites with not-so-relevant content in the first few pages,” elaborates the analyst. “Poor search engine processing and searching capabilities are also responsible for irrelevant search results.”  Besides this, spam content imposes certain limitations on search engines including updating search engine databases with spam links, lowering search engine performance and causing user dissatisfaction.

However, with the increased number of innovations and the emergence of new technologies on the search engine front, existing challenges can be overcome. Smart searching technologies, varied techniques to avert spam and improve the degree of relevance in search together with  a vast range of applications for mobile, social, image, and other arenas of search will provide optimal value to end users and guarantee strong revenue growth for enterprises and consumers. “Core search engine developers could focus on developing search engine solutions that are tailor made for mobile devices,” advises the analyst. “Moreover, importance should be given to enhance and perform smart interlinking of users’ social interest and profile information.” Developers should incorporate mechanisms which strike the balance between personalization and scope definition of search results.
