Under-penetrated Market offers Significant Growth Opportunities The European dental implant market is largely under-penetrated and dominated by a few major companies. Growth rates are attractively high owing to the fact that most of the dentists lack familiarisation with the product due to educational limitations at the undergraduate and university levels. Moreover, in most of the European countries implant dentistry is not considered a specialisation, and dentists who feel they can carry out the dental procedure for the placement of the implant are allowed to do so, irrespective of the level of their specialisation or education or work experience. Apart from these, the other major driver for the market include the simplicity of the dental procedure, the immediacy of the prosthesis and the never-ending quest for attaining long-term aesthetics in dentistry. However, the high level of brand loyalty among dentists is proving a major challenge for dental companies wanting to gain market share. "The good news for the market leaders is that the majority of the clinicians in the market prefer to work with large and stable companies that have a strong R&D base behind the product and can carry out education programmes for them as well as stand behind any product issues or recalls," notes the analyst of this research service. "This, in turn, is acting as an entry barrier as emerging companies find it hard to influence the clinician into accepting their products." Immediate Solutions Drive Market Growth The concept of immediate loading is fast becoming a major driver for the European dental implant industry as it provides several advantages over delayed loading. These include decreased treatment time, minimised surgical procedures, maximised aesthetic results and also provisionalisation of single tooth dental implants. What is more, given the high prices they pay for dental implant procedures, patients are showing an increasing preference for quick restorative solutions. This, in turn, is forcing companies to heighten focus on developing immediate solutions, while also focusing on simplifying procedures, protocols and instrumentation. The simplicity of treatment attained thereof is leading dental clinicians to adopt implant dentistry more readily, furthering market growth. With regard to the market segments, the internal connection market accounted for the maximum revenues in 2006, growing by 12.8 per cent over 2005. With a large number of clinicians adopting the internal connection, and a many more actually preferring it to external connection, it is expected that the market will continue to grow at a rate of 13.1 to 14.7 per cent over the forecast period. "Introducing new products based on innovative technologies is a viable approach to growth in the European dental implant market," says the analyst. "As there is an increase in the incidence of edentulism, there are several opportunities that can be tapped from the affected population to increase revenues." |
