   Market Overview

Plant Automation to Drive Market Expansion

The world valves and actuators market will experience steady growth over the long term. Increasing demand across various regions is driving market expansion. North America remains the largest market with respect to consumption, while Asia leads in terms of growth rates. Regulations pertaining to emission levels are boosting market potential. The biggest challenge facing the market is the ability of suppliers to augment manufacturing capacity in order to meet the current levels of consumer demand. Furthermore, in a highly fragmented market, suppliers confront the issue of setting competitive pricing standards, particularly in the lower end of the market. In the high end of the market, reliability will be key to fostering strong relations with end users. While retrofitting of products will represent a potential revenue generator in mature markets, the growing interest in plant automation will turn the focus on quarter-turn valve products, as they are easy to automate. The heightened interest in plant automation to reduce downtime and boost productivity will contribute significantly to market growth.

In terms of supply chain, the market is predominantly a direct selling market although it varies according to region, product and end users. End users prefer products from a single supplier in the lower market, although specialised suppliers are favoured in the higher end of the market. "Suppliers need to develop their product range and distribution networks," advises the analyst of this research. "Suppliers also need to maintain good relations with distributors in order to effectively cater to the immediate needs of end users."

Challenges Notwithstanding, Market Poised for Steady Growth

The world industrial valves and actuators market earned revenues of $26.69 billion in 2007 and is estimated to grow at a steady rate of 9.1 per cent to reach $49.18 billion in 2014. Market growth has been spurred by high oil prices, increasing investments in the rapidly growing economies of Asia and government regulations pertaining to emission control. The spiralling need for resources like water and power, the changing food habits of people in areas such as Eastern Europe and Asia that are driving the food and beverage industry and an ageing population that is supporting the pharmaceutical market in Europe are enhancing market prospects. However, market growth is being hampered by demand outstripping manufacturing capacity and the shortage of skilled labour and raw materials. At the same time, political instability in certain regions is dampening investments.

The North American market holds the largest share of the total market, accounting for nearly 35 per cent of the market share. The Asia Pacific market stands second with a share of nearly 28 per cent, while Europe’s market share is at 16.1 per cent. Product wise, self-acting and control valves hold the highest share with nearly 30 per cent of the total market and this is set to increase over the long term in conjunction with the rising interest in plant automation. Multi-turn valves contribute the second largest share of revenues – 28 per cent. This share is set to decline over the long term as quarter-turn valves gain popularity. The energy sector consumes the major share of the market in terms of applications, accounting for nearly 70 per cent of the total market.
