Opportunities and Challenges in the Shifting Sites of Care

In 2006, Andy Grove et al. introduced their solution to the problem of an
aging population and its implications on the US healthcare system and its
providers. He called his initiative “shift to the left” and started to discuss
technology that might make preventive care a reality and home care
effective and affordable to the US healthcare system. The “shift to the left”
moves patients out of today’s costly acute care into tomorrow’s home
care. We ask: Who is on a move – an industry or patient care?

Insight, Opti-price® and Due Diligence as Essential Steps in Early Stage Product Valuation

CO-FACILITATORS:

Christopher Jones, D.Phil., Director, Health Economics and Outcomes Research, The Aequitas Group, Inc.

Charmie Chirgwin, R.N., Managing Director, Business Development, The Aequitas Group, Inc.

In the last 5 years, we have seen rapid growth in two key areas: early stage product valuation and due diligence.  Early stage product valuation can be a moving target. Components such as inflation, currency differentials, price hikes, regulatory changes, fluctuating market capture, and unknown impact of future competitors do little to place this target in clear sight. Determining where the target will be in the near-, middle- and long-term is of paramount importance, particularly for product commercialization and payer uptake.  Oftentimes, the structure of a clinical trial can affect the potential reimbursement of a product or therapy by today’s private and public payers.

Whereas due diligence has traditionally been used as a verifying tool – a box to tick – such a narrow approach can be a costly mistake if valuable information is overlooked. Participants will be asked to share their experiences including lessons learned from “nightmare stories”, and how they have used due diligence as a “deal breaking” tool. In addition, participants will be asked when and in what context one might consider using investigative due diligence as a “deal making” tool. A meaningful combination of insight with due diligence can create a product that is more valuable than the sum of the parts.

By the end of this session, participants will receive insights on how to:

  • Choose the right strategy consulting partner who offers insight rather than hindsight
  • Utilize Opti-price® to evaluate early-stage IP based on changing market assumptions; where inventors, company executives, angel financiers, and second-stage funding bodies will be offered an interdisciplinary approach to evaluating and establishing long-term product value
  • Engage the right partner to investigate market competition, perform multiple levels of due diligence and test or establish a value proposition

Joseph V. Gulfo, MD, MBA, President and CEO, Electro Optical Sciences

Learn how Electro-Optical Sciences, Inc., an innovator in the field of medical computer vision technology, recently closed a $9 million extension of its Series C Preferred financing. In addition, the company has secured a Protocol Agreement with the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for its Pre-market Approval (PMA) Application pivotal clinical trial of MelaFind®, EOS’ proprietary diagnostic system for the early detection of melanoma.

EOS is a medical device company focused on designing and developing a  non-invasive, point-of-care instrument to assist in the early diagnosis of  melanoma. MelaFind(R), EOS's flagship product, features a hand-held  imagingdevice that emits light of multiple wavelengths to capture images of  suspicious pigmented skin lesions and extract data. Using sophisticatedalgorithms, the data are then analyzed against a proprietary database of melanomas and benign lesions in order to provide information to the physician and produce a recommendation of whether the lesion should be biopsied.
