The Software-defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) market has evolved from the early adopter stage to the early growth stage of the product lifecycle. Frost & Sullivan’s previous survey, in 2016, provided insights into the SD-WAN market as it was navigating through the early adopter stage. In the last two years, enterprise decision makers have equipped themselves with a much better understanding of the benefits that SD-WAN brings to enterprise WANs. SD-WAN vendors and managed SD-WAN providers alike report witnessing a surge in sales and actual deployments. The Frost & Sullivan 2018 SD-WAN survey validates market trends, and captures insights into future adoption trends. In this report, we provide a detailed analysis of the 2018 SD-WAN survey results that focus on enterprises’ current and planned adoption strategies for SD-WAN; perceived enterprise benefits of SD-WAN; and the criteria that network/IT decision-makers use while evaluating an SD-WAN vendor.

Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) services, as defined in this study, are business internet services that include the following features: • Business-grade, dedicated internet connections that offer symmetrical upload and download speeds • Service level agreements from providers that ensure availability and performance guarantees (latency, jitter, packet loss) • Proactive monitoring of networks and 24x7x365 customer support • Connections from customer locations directly to provider’s internet router The aforementioned characteristics differentiate DIA services from broadband services, which are mostly delivered over over-subscribed networks, without performance guarantees. Please note that some broadband services offered in the market are termed business internet services, and offer symmetrical speeds, but they do not come with the same performance guarantees and SLAs as DIA services. Research Scope • The research study covers the U.S. market for Dedicated Internet Access services through the period 2017 to 2022. • Analysis includes market trends analysis, revenue and ports forecasts, and pricing analysis. • The analysis includes retail (sales to enterprises) and wholesale (sales to carriers, content providers, system integrators, etc.) revenues, and percentage breakouts of revenues by service type. • Additionally, this study provides market share analysis based on revenues for the U.S. DIA services market only. Revenues considered for this research include revenues recognized by service providers from all types of dedicated Internet access services as described in the preceding paragraph. Business broadband services are excluded from this analysis.

In this paper, we look at the two dominant approaches available for businesses to virtualize branch network functions, and software-define the branch. As can be deduced from the partial list of questions stated above, there is no single answer for all enterprises. The choice will depend on the current state of the WAN infrastructure; the business segment and/or vertical focus of the organization; network/IT initiatives underway, or planned, to align business goals with technology investments, at a minimum. Therefore, the options described here are less prescriptive and more educational in nature.
