When Nokia announced its acquisition of rival network equipment vendor Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) in April 2015, the long-anticipated move was seen as a necessary response to the market dominance of Ericsson and fierce price competition from Huawei. Since then, Ericsson has teamed up with Cisco in a global strategic partnership that appears as committed as a full merger but without attracting regulatory scrutiny.
