Proteomics, the study of proteins, involves isolation, identification, expression, and characterization of the structure and function of proteins. Proteomics offers opportunities to improve the drug development process in various ways. One method is by identifying additional proteins to act as potential drug targets, which could lead to viable new drugs; other methods include determining protein expression levels, or the amount of protein in a cell or tissue. This enables researchers to learn more about the role that proteins play in disease.
