Wear and material degradation due to friction is a major concern in various industries where moving parts have inadequate lubrication. Generally, friction is caused when two surfaces come in contact and lead to molecular adhesion and surface roughness. Solid materials possess some degree of roughness, which is perceived as the primary reason for resistance to sliding motion. The high points in the surface causing roughness interfere while sliding and cause abrasion and wear to the material substrate. Especially in machinery and engines operating at high pressures and temperatures, wear caused due to friction leads to reduction in performance of the system leading to increase in energy requirements and frequent maintenance. In medical devices, there is a need to prevent friction by making the exterior surface smooth and slippery so as to facilitate the ease of penetration through tissues. Considering these needs, material scientists and coating developers have focused on identifying the source of friction in different systems to evolve strategies to eliminate friction and enhance performance.
