The offshore energy industry is a capital intensive engineering segment with installations expected to perform at high levels of operating efficiencies for periods of up to 20 years depending on the magnitude of operation. Parts and components designed for such installations such as the wind turbine blades of offshore wind farms and platforms of the oil and gas drilling and production systems are usually made with metals and metal alloys that are capable of withstanding large amounts of load and harsh operating conditions. However, surfaces of equipment that are exposed to the offshore environment experience frequent changes in the ambient conditions that translate to degradation in the strength and surface integrity of the parts and components due to contact with water, moisture, salt concentrations, and high temperatures. In order to meet the requirements for operating in such environments, equipment manufacturers are constantly looking for innovative coatings and surface technologies that can be leveraged in order to provide a defense mechanism and help prolong lifetime of their products. In this issue of the Advanced Coatings and Surface Technology TOE, we profile latest developments in the field of coatings and surface modifications that can offer desired functionalities on the exterior of equipment designed according to the standards of the offshore energy industry. The Advanced Coating & Surface Technology TechVision Opportunity Engine (TOE) provides intelligence on technologies, products, processes, applications and strategic insights on various coatings across industries. This encompasses protective and functional coatings such as antimicrobial coatings, food coatings, energy-saving coatings, smart glazing, hydrophilic, hydrophobic and super hydrophobic coatings, corrosion protection coatings, barrier coatings and paints. The Chemicals and Advanced Materials cluster tracks research & innovation trends and developments across specialty chemicals, plastics, polymers, chemicals, bio-chemicals, metals, coatings, thin films, surface treatments, composites, alloys, oil and gas, fuel additives, fibers and several other related technologies and its impact and application across industries. Keywords: Functional coatings, anti-corrosion, anti-icing, ice-phobic, thin film, wind farms, offshore platform, oil and gas, energy
