Anti-fouling Coatings for Offshore Structures

Growth of algae on offshore structures causes fouling, which inhibits efficient operation, and damages the body of marine vessels. To prevent this, research has been focused toward offshore platform coatings, which are antifouling biocide coatings. On application of the coatings, biocides are released, which prevent the growth of microorganisms on the surface of the offshore platform. However, such biocides can negatively impact the natural aquatic ecosystem causing death of marine life. To address this issue, newly developed solutions release the bare minimum quantity (only around 5% to 10% of existing formulations) of biocides, which will cause negligible damage to marine surroundings. More materials are being studied in this space across the globe with sufficient funding provided by regional governments.
