This edition of the Energy and Power Systems TechVision Opportunity Engine (TOE) focuses on developments in compressed air energy storage, marine electrification, wind turbine monitoring, thermal energy storage. Each of these innovations and profiles address a key challenge in each of these sectors. The slag-based molten energy storage innovation for instance focuses on the making the steel industry more energy efficient and thermal energy storage more cost-effective. Similarly, the hybrid electric propulsion focuses on reducing emissions due to vessels and make the marine sector more efficient in fuel usage. This will be particularly useful given the stringent regulations imposed by IMO for emissions reduction. The TOE also covers innovations in smart energy management and wind turbines inspection. An interesting new concept called solar-wind inverted flags for energy harvesting that can be used in small-scale electronics is discussed along with the design aspects modified and limitations addressed to enhance performance. The Energy and Power Systems TOE provides insights on the latest advances in the broad range of technology related to the energy industry. The topics regularly presented range from energy storage technologies (solid state batteries, solar chemical storage and other advanced energy storage devices) to non-renewable energy such as oil and gas. Special emphasis is given to emerging areas in the renewable sector such as photovoltaics, wind energy, and geothermal energy, and emerging alternative fuels such as hydrogen, syngas, ethanol and biofuels. The EPS TOE keeps clients abreast of the latest R&D developments at major corporate and academic research centers, provides competitor intelligence and helps create strategic alliances. The Energy and Environment cluster provides global insights and intelligence on a wide variety of disruptive emerging technologies and platforms ranging from energy storage, advanced batteries, solar and wind energy, to unconventional oil, bioenergy, geothermal energy, and energy transmission. Keywords: Electric propulsion, hybrid propulsion, compressed air energy storage, thermal energy storage, molten slag, steel industry, smart solar home, DC nanogrid, power module, energy harvesting, piezoelectric strip, AC-DC hybrid grid
