Alex spoke about the business case for innovation, how Cisco innovates, and how to help employees connect with their passion and drive innovation.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>OVERVIEW<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, if you don\u2019t operate under the principle of \u2018disrupt or be disrupted\u2019 you are most likely setting your company up to fail. Forty percent of today\u2019s Fortune 500 companies won\u2019t exist in 10 or 20 years. Recent examples of once prospering but now defunct companies include Blockbuster, Circuit City, Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, and Kodak. All are no longer here. How did this happen? Big companies get comfortable because they are \u2018old and wise,\u2019 but develop tunnel vision.<\/p>\n<p>Remember when there were taxis everywhere. And we couldn\u2019t envision a world without them? Then Uber and Lyft came along and now they are practically gone. Now it\u2019s an oddity to see one around town. The same principal applies to the phone, television and media. Now there\u2019s Hulu, Nextflix, Skype, Facebook, Whatsapp. Retail stores have largely gone the way of Amazon. You have to ask, \u201cWho\u2019s going to own our space in the business tomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026Disruption wins.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ACTION ITEM <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Think about how all these factors feed into each other:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Market disruptors<\/li>\n<li>Hyper connectivity<\/li>\n<li>Speed of innovation<\/li>\n<li>The lower cost of innovation<\/li>\n<li>Access to funding<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TAKE AWAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cisco innovates using a 5 Pillar Approach:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Build<\/li>\n<li>Buy<\/li>\n<li>Partner<\/li>\n<li>Invest<\/li>\n<li>Co-develop<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A key component of this 5 Pillar Approach is developing talent, which is vital. Also crucial is figuring out how to leverage the ideas of CEO\u2019s from companies acquired. It is\u00a0 about getting employees involved, which means co-developing. Cisco does this by providing access to tools at Cisco Innovation centers and\/or encouraging employees to partner with universities.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important for companies to think like start-ups but scale like enterprises. At Cisco, the goal is to empower all employees to innovate. This mandate is supported by human resources as well as corporate strategy. The philosophy is, let\u2019s get everybody at the company to share ideas. When this happens, it stimulates a network of people who are passionate about something.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cisco uses a Rapid Innovation Process:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Meet online<\/li>\n<li>Employees call each other and talk about priorities<\/li>\n<li>Ask for employee ideas<\/li>\n<li>A 200 person team and 30 ideas move forward<\/li>\n<li>If you are a part of those 30 ideas, you can see any executive at the company<\/li>\n<li>Then they validate ideas with customers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other Cisco take-aways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They acquire a few companies every quarter<\/li>\n<li>They partner with universities and start-ups<\/li>\n<li>They invest in companies and accelerators<\/li>\n<li>They develop innovation centers<\/li>\n<li>They drive revenue through non-traditional means<\/li>\n<li>They give structure and guidance to employees to innovate<\/li>\n<li>They utilize practical trading &#8211; pair trades with customers on real problems<\/li>\n<li>They foster non-traditional member relationships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>KEY INSIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drive innovation<\/li>\n<li>Innovation is survival\u2026constant changes can be the norm<\/li>\n<li>Ask everyone to play a role: founders, \u2018angels\u2019<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>IMPLEMENTATION GUIDELINES <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Create:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Innovation Programs<\/li>\n<li>Mentoring Programs<\/li>\n<li>Rewards<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>FINAL THOUGHT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reality is you can\u2019t mandate innovation, but you can create an environment where employees can feel passionate about something.
