Small Innovations for a Big Future in Nanobiotechnology

The advent and the introduction of Nanobiotechnology in the healthcare sector has had a vast impact in the field of drug discovery and diagnostics.

Nanomarkets have revealed that important opportunities exist at the intersection of nanotechnology and traditional pharmaceutical R&D, though much uncertainty remains on how this will affect the industry.

The commercial applications of nanotechnology in the field of medicine and health includes: implants and prosthetics, diagnostics using MEMs and sensors, drug delivery using nanoparticles and molecular carriers, lab on chip, and advanced drug delivery systems.

Nano-enabled drug discovery is all set to dominate in the next few years. The tools which may accelerate the nanoenabled drug discovery are AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy), NSOM (Near field Scanning Optical Microscope), high-resolution 2D gel electrophoresis, dip pen lithography (DPL), quantum dots, nanotubes, nanowires, dendrimers, cantilever arrays, nanocomposites, nanofilms and nanomass spectrometry. Nanotechnology is being touted as the next evolutionary step in miniaturization of bio affinity tests for proteins, nucleic acids and receptor ligand pairs.

The growth of nanomarkets can be fragmented into nanomedicines and nanodiagnostic tools.  Nanomedicine will derive its gains from nanopolymers and nanoprotein treatments based on humanized monoclonal antibodies, neurological disorders and viral infections. Nanomedicine will also see its application for drug delivery systems, which will include tools such as nanoscale plasma coating, antifouling nanocoating, nanogold gels, nanosilver gels, nanobiosensors and nanoarray biochips.
