Movers & Shakers Interview with Mr. Rajesh Maurya, Country Manager India & SAARC, Fortinet Inc.

Published: 23 Oct 2015

Founded in 2000, Fortinet has grown steadily for over 14 years. It has more than 2,800 employees in 30+ offices worldwide, boasts profitability with strong, positive cash flows, and nearly $1 Billion in the bank, and market-leading technology with 194 patents awarded and 156 patents pending.

Fortinet protects the most valuable assets of some of the largest enterprises, service providers, and government organizations across the globe. The company's fast, secure, and global cyber security solutions provide broad, high-performance protection against dynamic security threats while simplifying IT infrastructure. Fortinet's solutions are backed by the industry's highest level of threat research, intelligence, and analytics.

The increasing number of security threats in a day is forcing CSOs to create a new security framework for their organizations. How well is Fortinet placed to help organizations create robust defence strategies against security breaches?

Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs is one of the largest and most experienced threat intelligence and threat research organizations in the world. Every day we are tracking down, fixing, and discovering new threats. With over 51 Zero-Days discovered in just the first few months of 2015, we are beating the bad guys at their own game, and working with vendors to fix problems. Our research is available along with our products in order to give customers unparalleled visibility and intelligence within their own environments.

We also offer a threat assessment program to organizations free of charge. Through the assessment process, the FortiGate high-performance next generation firewall will be installed within the customer network, where it monitors application traffic traversing the network for intrusions, malware, and malicious applications that could collectively cause a massive risk to the network, giving attackers access to a company's most sensitive files and database information. At the end of the data collection period, a detailed 'Risk Assessment Report' will be generated, using FortiAnalyzer. This provides an analysis of application traffic, user productivity, network utilization, overall security risk, and the related business risk, as well as detailed, actionable mitigation recommendations. Our new Cyber Threat Assessment program is specifically designed to quickly detect threats that other solutions do not intercept to help customers significantly increase protection, while decreasing business risks.

Fortinet has launched the fastest Next Generation Firewall (NGFW). How do you see the acceptance of the same in the Indian market?

Traditional firewalls have not kept pace with the changing threat landscape, forcing organizations to look to next-generation firewalls for a deeper level of inspection. Today, customers want gateways that fight advanced threats, like Zero-Day malware and those that respond to new cybercriminal tactics, such as encrypting payloads or stolen data inside of an SSL tunnel. Therefore, advanced threat prevention, sandboxing, and more are becoming the norm with an emphasis on security effectiveness and performance, above all else. Customers are looking for high-performance, next-generation security that won't slow down their business or break their budgets.

SDN-enabled network security is anticipated to be a game changer for enterprise IT. Is this going to be a key focus area for Fortinet?

We have recently announced our new Software-Defined Network Security (SDNS) framework – the first of its kind across the industry - designed to provide advanced threat protection through the integration of security into the modern, agile data center environment. This new framework provides a clear vision and actionable steps in delivering a comprehensive approach to securing the data center, while providing the most extensible platform for infrastructure integration with technology partners. SDN Security redefines advanced cybersecurity in a world where data centers are being transformed by the adoption of virtualization, cloud computing, and now software-defined networking.

The new Fortinet SDN Security framework exemplifies the company's innovations across all principal layers of the network architecture:

  • Data Plane – the encapsulation of security engines from fixed hardware boxes into logical instances, that can have more scalable distribution and embed deep into virtualized switching fabric and abstracted network flows.
  • Control Plane – the orchestration and automation of security policy with provisioning of elastic workloads to eliminate security and compliance gaps in highly agile, dynamic environments.
  • Management Plane – a 'single pane-of-glass' for security policy and events across physical and virtual appliances, private and public clouds, and throughout converged infrastructure to ensure a consistent and compliant security posture.

Fortinet's efforts in the software-defined arena began more than five years ago with the first FortiGate-VM virtual appliance designed to secure increasingly virtualized and consolidated data centers. These efforts have expanded, along with the ongoing transformation of the data center, including recent milestones such as: new Fortinet security appliances to support Microsoft Azure; membership in HP's AllianceOne program to deliver pre-integrated and  optimized security for HP's SDN portfolio; integration with Cisco's application-centric infrastructure (ACI), and network security efforts for VMware vSphere and SDDC customers.

With so many vendors offering network security solutions, how does Fortinet differentiate itself from the others? What is your key value proposition to enterprises?

Fortinet's cyber security solutions, powered with our latest ASICs, deliver the industry's best performance and scale, while securing and simplifying the IT infrastructure. This means Fortinet is able to effectively detect and stop threats both inside of the perimeter and out without compromising existing applications. Our ability to understand, react, and respond to changes in the larger threat landscape means our customers are protected regardless of what the future brings.

Fortinet's global organization is capable of delivering product, people, and services wherever they are required. Fortinet's technical organization ensures customer's requirements are met throughout the pre and post sales lifecycles, maximizing network availability and reliability.

Our broad product line of complementary solutions goes beyond traditional Network Security to address all of the security needs of the extended enterprise - whether network, branch, cloud, mobile, data center, or other complex environments. This end-to-end security solution includes scalable management, control and reporting, giving comprehensive visibility on the state of the network, regardless of its size or complexity.

Our focus on constant innovation of our custom ASICs, hardware systems, network software, management capabilities, and security research has enabled us to quickly grow our highly satisfied, global customer base of more than 218,000 customers, including majority of the Fortune Global 100. Our market position and effectiveness of our solutions has been widely validated by industry analysts, independent testing labs, business organizations, and the media worldwide. We continue to set the pace in the cyber security industry.

Technology providers and service providers are partnering to develop the Smart ecosystem, in line with the Indian Prime Ministers vision of building Smart cities and Digital India. Is Smart Security in your roadmap and are there significant steps taken by Fortinet in this direction?

The Digital India program has stressed on creating an IT infrastructure that provides a safe and secure cyberspace along with high speed internet to deliver services to citizens.

Fortinet offers broad, integrated protection in a security platform that scales from the endpoint to the cloud, from megabit to terabit, and can be deployed across Digital India projects, from the smallest office to the largest data center. Fortinet is capable of delivering product, people, and services wherever they are required and can place the right technology at the right place in Digital India's network to provide a comprehensive security solution.

We have a dedicated government vertical team that has the expertise and knowledge to work on large government projects. A comprehensive support plan will be in place for our partners who will be working on these projects to provide them with a single point of contact for all technical, sales, and post sales assistance.

Our professional services can be availed for any of these projects where a qualified on-site engineer will assist in implementing our solution. Post implementation, we will conduct extensive training programs which will enable the government team working on the project to configure and work with our solutions.

What is Fortinet's 2020 vision for Network Security solutions?

By 2020, Fortinet aims to lead the cyber security market with the industry's fastest and most secure solutions that go beyond traditional security to protect customers everywhere they need to be protected – inside the border and out.
