Frost & Sullivan Lauds nexTier Networks for its Novel DLP Technology, the Semantic Firewall©

Palo Alto, Calif. — January 19, 2009 — Based on its recent analysis of the North American network security infrastructure protection market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes nexTier Networks, Inc. with the 2009 North American Frost & Sullivan Excellence in Technology of the Year Award for developing a path-breaking semantic intelligence-based Data Leak Prevention (DLP) technology that is capable of comprehensively monitoring and blocking unauthorized access to business-sensitive data in transmission.

"Enterprises are scouting for new technologies that could help them better secure data, and DLP technology is one of the most promising ones," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Achyuthanandan S. "With its innovative approach to DLP, nexTier has helped ignite a new-era in DLP technologies that require little to no human intervention to secure data."

nexTier' Semantic Firewall© technology offers robust resistance to commonly used evasion techniques such as rewording of content, regeneration, repositioning and even copy-paste functions of content. It can automatically discover data, no matter where it is located on the enterprise network, analyze the structure of the data to extract meaning, and then determine the data's security value.

This is enabled by the company's Information Enthalpy (IE)–Vector Encoding technology that consists of sophisticated algorithms, which analyze data to generate IE-Vector sequences that produce a unique sequence or signature called the Semantic DNA Sequence™ (not more than 1,000 bytes in size). These are unique to each document and enable automatic tracking, monitoring and access control of confidential data, thereby preventing data leaks. The Semantic DNA Sequence™ also helps detect evasion as it can be used to identify the source of data, even if it has been drastically rephrased or modified.

The most innovative aspect of the Semantic Firewall© is nexTier's proprietary Semantic-Security Correlation technology. Powered by the company's path-breaking Security-Semantic CORelation and indEXxing (S2 COREX™) algorithms, it enables the analysis of data in real-time based on the security value of data, with minimal or no human intervention required. Furthermore, it scales the accuracy and speed deficiencies of conventional DLP approaches and algorithms such as Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI).

nexTier's algorithms can classify and correlate unstructured, semi-structured and structured data based on certain defined factors. This approach delivers complete data security classification and defines specific domain knowledge and a semantic set of data that need to be secured. nexTier's technology also enables IT administrators to mold an ontology-base specific to organizational policies.

"Once data is classified according to its criticality to business, unlike conventional DLP approaches, nexTier's technology is capable of applying security policies automatically," notes Achyuthanandan. "On the other hand, existing DLP approaches require human intervention to declare and set security policies on new documents, so that the system can enforce the appropriate pre-set security policies."

nexTier's edge is provided by Intelligent Policy Engine (IPE), which comprises of a patent pending three-dimensional contextual-conceptual reasoning algorithm, capable of identifying and differentiating between genuine communications and data leaks performed with malicious intent. The algorithm correlates agents such as machines, individuals, and processes, the data and operations such as e-mail, print, copy-paste, and others by performing real-time contextual-conceptual reasoning. In this manner, nexTier's technology is capable of drastically reducing the number of false positives and false negatives and, to a large extent, eliminate the need for human intervention.

Unlike conventional approaches that are deployed on the edge of the enterprise network, nexTier's technology is installed deep inside the network, exactly at the interface between data servers and employees. Due to its strategic positioning, nexTier's DLP technology comprehensively secures data leaks from all enterprise applications.

The company has already launched a DLP appliance developed on its semantic intelligence technology. The appliance is extremely scalable and can search billions of entries of data within minutes. It can handle traffic at data rates of 4 giga-bits per second and is capable of analyzing data from e-mail, fax, FTP, telnet, instant messages, and other enterprise communication means.

For its pioneering innovation with the Semantic Firewall© technology and its supporting ground-breaking algorithms and technologies nexTier is the worthy recipient of the 2009 Frost & Sullivan Award for Excellence in Technology of the Year for network security infrastructure protection.

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has pioneered the development and introduction of an innovative technology into the market; a technology that has either impacted or has the potential to impact several market sectors. This award recognizes a company's successful technology development that is expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. It also recognizes the company's overall technical excellence and its commitment toward technology innovation.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.

About nexTier Networks, Inc.

Headquartered in Santa Clara, CA, nexTier Networks has created a whole new way to secure business information by firewalling data at the "semantic layer" – the network communications layer at which the semantic meaning in data is communicated. Following years of research and development, nexTier delivers the first true breakthrough in data leak prevention by introducing the world's first semantically-aware security algorithms that identify, classify and protect information in real-time and across very large volumes of content with unprecedented accuracy. The company was founded by Silicon Valley security veteran Tarique Mustafa and is backed by a team, board and board of advisors that include many leading authorities from companies like Symantec, McAfee, VeriSign, Cisco, Juniper, GreenBorder, Sygate and Securify.
