Frost & Sullivan Applauds Cisco for its Revolutionary Space Router

Cisco Internet Routing in Space allows communication satellites to interface better with traditional wireline and wireless networks, enabling more seamless communication among mixed networks

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - March 23, 2012 - Based on its recent analysis of the satellite transponder market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Cisco with the 2012 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for Technology Innovation. The Cisco Internet Routing in Space (IRIS) payload is the only router in space, making Cisco a 100 percent share owner of the space routing market. The Cisco space router takes advanced routing and switching in space to unprecedented levels of sophistication.

Cisco IRIS allows space and satellite communications to take full advantage of the value and capability of networking. It extends the benefits of the Internet Protocol (IP) to satellite communications, which have traditionally used proprietary protocols that are difficult to operate within conventional IP-based wireline and wireless networks.

“The Cisco space router greatly improves communication satellite functionality,” said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Daniel Longfield. "Cisco IRIS makes satellites more flexible and enables them to maximize bandwidth utilization on communication services that are delivered, while simultaneously allowing the satellite to rapidly change services and applications."

Cisco IRIS shortens the time to market of new services and facilitates the transfer of satellite communications bandwidth from one application to another, allowing service providers to optimize bandwidth use and maximize revenue. It helps satellite service providers adapt to changing environments and requirements much faster than traditional satellites.

"The Cisco space router was launched on Intelsat 14 and tested extensively by the U.S. government," observed Longfield. “Intelsat is the largest operator of geostationary orbit satellites, and the successful testing of Cisco IRIS by the U.S. government has demonstrated that the Cisco space router is market-ready."

Cisco IRIS’s contribution to improving satellite communication cannot be overstated. It is bringing the satellite industry on par with the terrestrial networking improvements that Cisco has pioneered since its inception in 1984.

IRIS is satellite frequency band-agnostic. It will improve communication and bandwidth with traditional Ku- and C-band satellites, emerging high-throughput Ka-band satellites, as well as new military X-band satellites.

"Cisco IRIS reduces latency, increases throughput, improves network intelligence, and greatly enhances flexibility in satellite communications," noted Longfield. "This allows satellite operators and communication users to maximize the value of the limited satellite bandwidth currently in orbit."

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that demonstrates uniqueness in developing a technology that significantly impacts both the functionality and the customer value of the new products and applications. The award lauds the relevance of the innovation to the industry.
