How Automotive Sensing Is Evolving

Today, the automotive sensor landscape is undergoing structural change. As vehicle platforms become smarter, cleaner, and more connected, automakers must adopt sensor-centric designs that align with evolving technology and consumer expectations. This shift is being shaped by three intersecting megatrends:

  • Autonomous Mobility: LiDAR, radar, and 3D vision sensors enable vehicles to navigate complex environments with precision — supporting obstacle detection, lane recognition, and 360-degree awareness.
  • Electrification & Efficiency: Pressure and magnetic sensors are critical in optimizing EV battery performance, regenerative braking, and powertrain control — ensuring safety and reliability at every touchpoint.
  • Connected Experiences: Environmental sensors and telematics systems support real-time responsiveness, from adaptive climate control to predictive maintenance and V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) connectivity.

As adoption grows across the United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, the question becomes: Which sensing technologies will help automakers future-proof their vehicles and customer experiences?

Sensor Spotlight: Where Innovation Meets Investment

  • LiDAR: Vital for 3D environmental mapping, LiDAR saw an average of $31 million per funding round in 2023. Velodyne LiDAR alone raised $200 million to scale R&D and commercialization, supported by Amazon, Hyundai, and Baidu.
  • 3D Vision Sensors: Essential for ADAS and driver monitoring, 3D vision sensor adoption is growing across Europe. Basler AG’s acquisition of Roboception GmbH marked a major move in intelligent 3D perception.
  • Pressure Sensors: Key to brake systems, tire pressure, and battery safety. Continental launched its 2nd-gen tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) in India to boost efficiency and reduce manual intervention.
  • Magnetic Sensors anisotropic magneto resistance (AMR)/giant magneto resistance (GMR): Used in crankshaft, steering angle, and motor control. Niron Magnetics secured $25 million in funding, led by Samsung Ventures and Magna.
  • Environmental Sensors: Supporting emission control and cabin comfort, Europe is leading adoption. Clarity Movement raised $9.6 million to enhance air quality monitoring capabilities.
