Pittcon has always been more than just an annual conference for me, it’s where I go to gauge the direction of science, technology, and industry. But Pittcon 2026 felt different right from the start.

Despite spring break, the keynote session of Pittcon 2026 was packed with graduate level students and industry leaders alike. Dr. Frances H. Arnold, Nobel laureate, professor, and the keynote speaker was being solicited by all, from eager students to hardened industry veterans alike, for selfies usually reserved for Hollywood celebrities. The enthusiasm in the room gave me the first inkling that Pittcon 2026 was already worth its while. Kicking off the conference and expo with an inspiring talk from Dr. Arnold, Pittcon 2026 brought innovative thought to San Antonio for 5 days of learning, questioning, and seeking answers and most importantly, solving problems in all aspects of industrial, commercial and consumer life using science and technology.

A Meaningful Setting: San Antonio

This year, Pittcon was hosted in San Antonio. Inaugurated by Gina Ortiz Jones, Mayor of the city of San Antonio, it was a pleasure and a rare occasion that the conference and expo came to my beautiful home base for the last two decades. The city and Texas at large, has over five thousand life sciences and biotechnology related R&D and manufacturing firms. In addition, the proximity of the Energy Corridor in nearby Houston and the state being one of the largest producers of natural gas and oil, made the location for this conference and expo even more relevant. Pittcon brings with it innovation and technology improving Texas’ potential to become a leader in biofuels and green energy as well.

Experiencing Pittcon Differently This Year

As a regular Pittcon attendee, I would find myself attending at least a few conference sessions, absorbing the technical research being show cased. But this year, the buzz and activity from industry leaders and new challengers were so many that I had to put away my learning hat and always keep the business one on. With two full days of press releases, the market analyst in me was busy taking notes of new products.

LIMS and Lab Automation Prominence

Years of attending Pittcon has allowed me an insight into the analytical instrumentation world that is transforming from instrument focus to embracing Industry 4.0 technologies and emphasis on automation of the laboratory through software and services. In the last couple of years, Pittcon has prominently hosted more vendors offering Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) than before with exciting new announcements. This year was no different with the following:

  • LabVantage Solutions introduced LabVantage CORTEX, its next-generation artificial intelligence (AI), analytics, and automation platform. Understanding from their customers that the majority of them plan to implement some form of AI in their operations, this platform is meant to seamlessly integrate agentic AI and help create the vision of the autonomous lab of the future.
  • LabWare focused more on its LabWare ASSURE as its software as a service (SaaS)-based LIMS enabling labs to use subscription-based best practice workflows to reduce overheads and deploy faster.
  • Other LIMS vendors at the show that I hoped to meet in person but could not – Prisma and Confience with their MyLIMS.

Instrumentation: Still Relevant, but Evolving

While software and automation dominated the narrative, instrumentation continues to evolve in meaningful ways.

Shimadzu and Nexera IC – A key and important announcement by Shimadzu was on their Nexera IC Ion Chromatograph. The system combines advanced software and automation within a compact design to make routine analysis and regulatory and compliance testing consistent through preconfigured methods and workflows for both experienced and new operators.
Shimadzu also highlighted several of its offerings including the LCMS-8065XE Triple Quad Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer, the TOC-100e S Online Total Organic Carbon Analyzer, the MultiNA II Microchip Electrophoresis System, the ALTRACE Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer, I-Series LC-2070/LC-2080 Integrated HPLC systems, and the CF3-C8030 Centrifugal Field-Flow Fractionation System.

Consumables Having a Day in the Sun

Over the years, the event has evolved from showcasing hardcore instrumentation to demonstrating the industry’s shift toward automation and software-driven services. At the same time, Pittcon has also become the hub to highlight important advancements in the consumables area.

A prominent announcement from Restek was about its RMX GC Columns and introduction of TriMax deactivation technology. This introduction aimed to offer a contaminant-free surface that is inert and eliminates residual active sites, resulting in trace-level sensitivity, extended column performance and life, and symmetrical peaks in the analysis.

Hardcore Instrumentation Sidelined?

Pittcon has traditionally been a platform for tier-one instrumentation vendors to introduce and display their best and latest innovations. One is observing a trend of seeing less of the industry giants than before. Thermo Fisher Scientific, Bruker, Perkin Elmer are a few that come to mind with smaller presence at the event. Is that a validation of the trend of moving towards a more automation, software, and service-oriented industry? Or is it a cyclical phase of reduced budgets for marketing, conferences and tradeshows and the benefits they offer? These are questions worth looking into. It is imperative that these trends are assessed and acted upon, so vendors stay on top of their growth trajectory and plan for the inevitable future.

Insights, Engagements, and a New Era of Industry Collaboration

As someone closely tracking the analytical instrumentation and related software and services world, it was impossible to overlook the breadth of compelling showcases, demos, and concurrent sessions at the event. With multiple press briefings and technical discussions happening simultaneously, prioritization became essential. Every moment was an opportunity to listen, learn, and report on new and exciting developments in a highly dynamic industry. Business demands led to several insightful meetings with attendees and exhibitors and leave with an armful of innovative ideas of collaboration and business.

2026 is the first year of an official knowledge partnership between Pittcon and Frost & Sullivan forging a fruitful relationship that is focused on combining resources and leveraging relationships in the industry to showcase thought leadership in an industry that is changing rapidly and is in need of validated, third-party assessment of its current challenges and forecast of its path forward.
